Usefulness of the minimap?

Hi all,

Just a few observiations about the minimap. Why is it possible to see a ship with line of sight, panning camera etc but they don't show up on the minimap? Also a ship can be shooting at you and it doesn't show in the minimap. In the middle of a dog fight you want to see where the shots are coming from its quicker to glance at the minimap to id the shooter but they are not shown and you have to waste precious mili-seconds panning around to find out the direction.

Is this intentional? What are the rules for showing up on the minimap? I can understand a cloaked ship not showing up. But surely if they shooting at you any sane system would be able to inform you of the direction?

Is it supposed to be a fog of war thing or a radar type thing? Either way if something can be seen it should be on the minimap.

Shooting ships should show up, but do not get marked, the minimap shows a square of 14kmx14km. So ships more than 7km away wont show up, besides of course on the edges, as the diagonal of the square is greater than its edges.

However there are also some modules that allow to fire while cloaked. Like the heavy cloak of the Corvette or the Cloak Pulse of the Tacticals.

also one of the cloakes of artillery made it able to fire its mainweapon, if not both but yeah, the minimap thing is a bit different than in some other games but more realistic in that case that walls etc also block radar, but well, i would prefer a 3D minimap wich looks like a Ball wich also shows walls etc just with your ship in the centre, instead of that 2D minimap that only shows ships, and even teammates wich "talks" should be shown up on the minimap for a short time (as long as they "talk") even if they are behind a wall or something wich normaly make them dissapear on the minimap.

but yah, thats my opinion^^

In my eyes is the Map really buggy and expandable.

Some examples:

  • Two Ships of our Fleet are directly on the left side behind me. But the Minimap doesn´t show these ships.

  • Our Fleet spots some of the enemy Ships. But the Minimap doesn´t show these as well. Without Teamchat you don´t have much chances against fast ships like corvetts.

  • The Minimap doesn´t show the terrain or buildings. But this feature would be really helpfull. Especially on maps like Mars.

What is the strongest weapon of mankind? The ships of Akula Vector? No! The ships of Jupiter Arms? No! The ships of Oberon? The torpedo? The plasma broadside? No to everything!

Courage and courage alone overtake them all!

thats exactly what i mean, a 3D minimap-"Ball" wich shows walls, buildings and your ship in the centre, all ships that don't have walls or buildings between you and them, as next all ships that gets marked from your team, even if there are walls/buildinge between, with the mark also on the minimap, and last but not least, all ships of your team wich "talks" if with the "message-ring" that is already ingame and also if they use textchat or (ingame-)voicechat.

I agree that the minimap could certainly use some refinement. Our teams have talked about adjustments in the past, so I think it's safe to expect an improved minimap in the future.
