Monetisation

Basically, I think It would be a good idea to express how we feel about monetisation in this game. Now this is a pretty controversial topic when it comes to games, I've seen alot of drama when it comes to how games make there money and what sort of things they'd make available for the cash players and whales.
I myself have whaled 2 games, each one horrendously P2W. And its fair to say the only people who are the still playing them are the clueless noobs and the ones who spent so much money, (literally thousands to tens of thousands) that they couldn't stop playing even if they wanted without suffering tremendous remorse.

  • What crosses the line for me when it comes to monetisation is when developers stick specific content behind paywalls. Things like game modes and and maps, it sucks.

  • Having p2w promotional events. I'll give you an example, there is a game called ...forge that every months holds a promotion that gives you like a slot machine style mini-game. There is a bar that holds certain prizes which are unlocked by points. you spend currency to play the slot. Which itself is time-gated and the only way to skip the time gates is to spend premium currency that you have to buy. When the time expires and it gives you some points, how much is by RNG. Then you repeat the process until you accumulate enough points to unlock a reward. You would usually get 1 point each time, occasionally 5 or 25. though the best rewards are at 900 point, or 1200 points. So in order to get that much there's no other option but to spend money. Its takes around £40-70 to max the whole bar in the promotion.
If you don't spend money and do it the f2p way you wont even break 200 points by the time the promotion is over.
Things like that just genuinely tick me off. And just ruins the game no matter how good the game is, my opinion will be less of it.

  • Paying for expansions is another one, being a PC game the idea of paid expansions are very unappealing.

  • Things like paywalls, patience walls, pressure walls, lower the drive, at least my drive to keep playing the game.

  • A game with hundreds of hidden micro-transactions.
    Hidden cash transactions in general.

My main concern is now with the new linear progression system on DN I don't see any way the devs can make money on this game without doing any of the things above. If we were to go back before the shipyard update I could think of so many possibilities of fair monetisation but with the closed down unlock tree system it not only limits the player on what he can and cant do (or in this case, equip). But also the devs. With the system in place now, there cannot be monetisation without it being inherently linked to progression. Even if it might seem minor its something that always evolves into a undesirable trait in a game.

Now I don't wanna be all negative and only nag about this and that. So I have a few suggestions and ideas for some.
There has been alot of talk on making money on purely aesthetic items, and I think with a big capital ship game like DN that it would fit quite well. People like showing off, it makes them feel good, it gives them positive feelings and reinforces the likeness to the game. So why not give them more stuff to show off.

Examples:
There was a game I used to play a while ago called ace online. They had cash shop item that can change the missile trail effect on your missiles. You had quite a number of trails to choose from, each can only be assigned to 1 per weapon. And they were purely aesthetic. We can all agree DN is not the most realistic game. Its a FPS shooter space sim with a very arcadey feel. So we could change the weapon firing effects on ships like the trails in Ace online. So primary weapons could have there own effects, secondary weapons there own effects, various missiles and nukes with there own effects ect.

Going on from this idea, we can have flashy ship models that replaces the ship model of your choice, only changing the look, all weapons damage ranges and armour and your current config would all stay the same it would just be the ship model itself.

Another idea is that we can have advertisements in game, passively positioned in the UI so it wont interfere with any gameplay aspects and so you wont accidentally click on one by mistake.
Having elite status would take away all ads for the duration until it runs out.

And my last idea is merchandise, which really depends on the popularity and hardcore player base if there were to be any. This goes for all of the above too. More players, more popularity, more potential spenders. I know its not as simple as that but those are just my random ramblings.

What do you think and what are your concerns/ideas?

The stuck record that I am in regards to this game...

  • All ships should be purchasable from the get go with the limiting factor being credits (10's thousands etc) or GP. None of this tier nonsense, back to the 10 or so ships that were reasonably balanced.
  • Modules should be unlocked by experience either by ship (the new design) or general (like the old system) purchase with credits or GP once unlocked.

That then allows this to happen for monetisation

  • New ships can be created and balanced in to the current pool with a crazy high starting credit price which then reduces down after some amount of time. The GP value is the same or could start high and slowly go down in a similar manner.
  • New modules operate on the above model, once unlocked (or if you are max level automatically unlocked) can be added and purchased with credits or GP.
  • Customisation is the big money maker all ONLY with GP

    • Skins (recolours) and the variant models (that have been made for this patch) for ships
    • Emblems / dodads on your ships
    • Projectile visual modifications, everything from just being able to make everything shoot and explode in red confetti to seasonal purchases of shooting pumpkins/rainbow ponies/snowballs
    • Skins/clothing/poses/etc for your avatar
  • Or, heaven forbid, a buy2play game. Have a base 3 ship free to play that limits how much you can earn in credits or level in experience with a nominal entry fee if you like the game (10 of your currency or similar). This one is probably just crazy talk..

My two cents

Then why on EARTH did you just make a SciFi World of Warships Tanks Hyrbid? I heard and saw so many cool things about this game, just bought the $49 pack and invited friends with the codes......now we are all about to go back to whatever we were each playing before.

This model is terrible. The progression system is GARBAGE.....we were all excited about the different roles we wanted, then we saw this nightmare show of a progression tree.......so if I want to get into Heavy Destroyer I have to go play a Sniper for 3 Tiers?
Or your new match making system, good lord, you realize one of the biggest "Yeah screw this game" factors of World of Warships / War Thunder / Etc is the whole "Hey , welcome to the match, enjoy being completely dominated because you are super over tiered this game, you're useless, have fun!".
You guys seriously need to reflect on some design choices....

Well they fixed matchmaking a little, but as far as the progression system goes I couldn't agree more. The devs need to realize that if they dont make some major changes to it soon, and by that I mean making the tech tree MUCH less grindy, then they will lose the majority of their player base. It would be such a shame to see this game fail, but if the devs don't take proper action soon it could very well happen.
