You'd be telling your core/long time players are the time and money they spent on the game is now fot nothong because everyone is back to square one. Theyre investments would be wasted and in terms of elite status youre taking away the product they payed for. How can you not consider that harmful? Those players would likely bolt and numbers go down even further.
Which product are you referring to?
And do you mean to say that achievements are more important than gameplay? If the old alpha/beta population has to start again, big deal. People who like to play will continue to play. No sunk cost should interfere with that. This whole king of the mountain system with finely tuned builds can start fresh. At least this time more poeple will push for the heights.
Elite status. People paid for it to progress faster so if you do a wipe they will have paid for nothing in return. Sunk costs gets you somewhere, a wipe means you just threw money away. Same with all those hours of the grind; they would all mean nothing. So yes, it is a big deal if veteran players lost all they got.
Imagine if you worked for a company for years, got increases in wages, time off, benefits etc and then the company is struggling and goes "we're rolling everyone back to entry level positions because the newer employees sake." So now your wages, time off and benefits are back to where you started years earlier. Would that be no big deal? Thats pretty much a wipe does: everything they spent time and money on gets taken away. Again, I dont see how you think that isnt a problem.
Further, even with the same ships the experienced players are still going to win because of said experienced, so the whole point of your wipe doesnt even really help.
