How do I play the Palos?

So, I recently bought the Palos tactical cruiser and have really been struggling to figure out how it's supposed to play, i've tried searching the forums and internet for information on how to play it and the only inkling of information i've managed to find is "it's good against corvettes", which is all well and good but that seems a bit niche to base the entire gameplay of a ship around. Is there something i'm missing or some secret to playing it right? Or is it just an underwhelming ship which can't really do much?

This ship just seems to lack any kind of edge, it hasn't got particularly impressive firepower, honestly it doesn't even feel like it does much more damage than the Ceres at tier III (which I feel like there should be a more noticeable difference given I can't actually heal). The ship isn't particularly tanky either, which means it's not going to be able to get in close to brawl, which would sort of be what would make sense given it's decent speed, but as I previously mentioned it's low armor and lack of firepower means in a close-range fight you'll get ground into dust and getting close enough to use your Tesla's is practically suicide.
The module selection also seems too limited to really diversify your options for different playstyles. Unless there's some module that's way better in practice than it appears on paper.

Is there some secret playstyle that makes this ship shine? Or is it just a deadweight without any redeeming features? If so, is the rest of this line like that, I notice the tier IV and V's have a lot more modules that could open up more interesting playstyles as well as a better selection of secondary weapons. I really want to like this ship and it's line because I love the idea of a damage focused class with good support capability, also I won't lie, half the reason I want to play this line is because they're the most badass looking ships in the game IMO smile .

So yea, if anyone could answer some of those questions for me and give me some advice or tips on how to play the Palos (and the rest of it's line for that matter) that'd be great! Thanks.

Like a healer with no heals.
Scratch ships with laser, try to steal a kill.

T4 version of this ship actually can do some havok (ive managed to make over 16 kills), but it requires several rare OBs and expensive modules. Without it ship is useless as its t3 version.
Anyway, if you want to play tac - choose Aion. It has even better heal than Koshey at medium distance (but weaker at close range), slightly weaker damage that light tac, more HP, better speed, and can heal. Its basically Jack-of-all-trades.

i actually really like the palos, allot of people make the mistake of using it like a healer, even though it doesn't really have any heals, basically it is what it is a support ship with no heal beams, your jobs pretty much to escort your allies, eg : dreads healing tacs, keep corvettes off them and hit what your allies are hitting, the biggest trick with this ship though is to amp weapons and use amplify beam at the same time, for a massive temporary damage increase to take down ships around the half health mark quickly, if the enemies close by and distracted enough don't hesitate to dash in and let a blast pulse loose to finish the job, the idea is to just stay away from situations that will get you focused fired on and you definitely don't want to be caught on your own, the palos is pretty squishy you won't last long, palos is also pretty good for ducking in and out of cover to drain some health off the enemy when they aren't paying attention., being a bit sneaky pays off on this ship to.

So far, my Palos time has been best served hunting corvettes and supporting fire on anything in range that the team is focused on. I've been underwhelmed too, but there are moments of excellence that shine through.

I've switched my mods over to the heals for XP gain. The pod and the heal beams still do work, and they align with the plan of sticking with the team and getting all the assists and kill-steals as you can.

Play Palos in a way that gets you to Harwich in the shortest time possible.

This requires you to fit the Palos with repair auto beams, energy generator and module amper officer briefing (earn that from the Dola ASAP).

Then you hang with your team and keep auto repairs going as much as possible. If you have module amper then make sure you use energy to weapons while the repair beams are active. It will get you more points.

Then you just watch for vettes or other feeders and give them as much damage as possible. switch to secondary weapons if they come within 750 metres. Make sure you remember to switch back to primary weapon as they try to escape.

Like dreadpony said, the T4 version is where it gets interesting.

Ok, thanks for all the tips guys!

I've been trying to play it as you have all suggested and i've had a little more success than previously even if it's still a fraction of the performance i would get in the Ceres.

I'm glad the T4 gets better as it gives me some incentive to keep going on the grind smile

Not my doc, but you definitely should check it out:
Helped me out quite a bit when first starting with the Palos, and then moving onwards.

T4 Harwich is one of my main ships, rarely in less than the third rank at the end of a match.
The tricky thing I have found is choosing when it's best to use this ship based on what your teammates have chosen.

I won't repeat what others already said. You should try Palos in onslaught mode where you can kill fighters and assault ships for lots of points. Also there are more corvettes in onslaught. I usually ended up in rank 3-5 with a naked palos

You don't get exp from pod even with normal tac
