I just came out of a Veterans Proving Grounds. Base score, with only 14 kills was 800+ and overall score was great, about half again what I got in Legendary with 19 kills a few minutes ago. Congratulations on really screwwing things up.

I tried Legendary Proving Grounds. I got 19 kills. Old score would have been 5500+. New score was less than 2400. Way too big a nerf. Not sure this game is worth my time anymore. Not a happy camper.

Old base score would have been close to 750. This score was an even 600. Reminds me of the days when any score over 14 kills would net you a low 600 score. Nice screw-up.

I'm most of the way to a T5 arty playing almost exclusively Proving Grounds, and that's after finishing up getting the T4 version. With Battle Bonus, my scores are nearly as good as I ever got in other matches and I play two PG for about every one of anything else.

I'm also passively leveling the T4 ships that I want to be able to take into other matches. I've got 3 T4 OBs so far with another couple in the near future. Added some other modules as well since new T4s aren't much better than an experienced T3.

I rarely play without Battle Bonus. I have almost the same line-up in both a Veteran fleet and a Legendary fleet. Only difference is which arty is in which fleet. This allows my ships that I am passively leveling to receive the credits from both fleets.

I generally play Veterans first, then Legendary. About 10 minutes after I finish Legendary, I can play Veterans again. Then I go off and do something else on the computer for a half hour or so and then i can repeat.

Oh, and there is no Free XP awarded in Proving Grounds (yes, I have Elite). You frequently (usually) don't get the first win of the day either. I don't know if that is a general problem or not.

Played several matches yesterday with 7 live teammates in Recruit Proving Grounds. Joined some people in a squad that I only met online. They were noobs working for their fist T3s. If the developers were to un-nerf the bot ships they could win a lot of battles. Would make for an interesting PVE mode.

That would be correct, says someone who bought one and couldn't get it to work.

The basic problem that the developers have is the extremely short time in Recruit. This results in extremely long wait times without Veteran players as there are so few Recruit Captains at any one time in beta. This is also why Recruit fleets without a T1 in them usually get sucked into Veterans matches.

The fix is easy. Put a time limit on Recruit matches (say 5 minutes) and fill out the rest of both sides with bots like in Proving Grounds. With 5 minutes, you might just get enough players to fill out a side. Got enough to fill out more than 1, but not 2 sides? Sounds like 2 matches against bots. Throw in a couple of T3 bot opponents just to amp up the difficulty. The bots already clump around healers well, would be good experience to see how to survive longer and also

how to take down a ball. If you let bot arties actually target someone, and not just spray in the general direction, you could have bots that defeat real Captains.

Leave a Proving Grounds option For Recruits who feel a need to fly a ship in a "simulator" first.

I've been playing Murometz and Ballista. Ballista seems to hit harder.

Proving Grounds is PvE. You will team up with whoever is available within the 1 minute MM and then be matched against bots. Your team will consist of live players (frequently just you) and bot teammates. Takes the place of training, but lets you earn XP and credits. No FreeXp awarded.

Onlaught is a regular game mode that includes bot fighters, assault ships and command ships. Good place to play if you are still trying to figure out the game. Bot opponents allow some scoring opportunities even if you feel like a baby seal otherwise.

I went through T1, T2 and T3 right after the last wipe in about January. I feel your pain. I was against very experienced captains working their way back to the ships they wanted to play at T4 and above.

To make matters worse, I was new to gaming. When I was a kid, the equivalent of gaming was slot car racing and model rocketry.

With my inexperienced fingers, and a lot of patience I tried the following:

Played mostly Onslaught. At least there you can seal club fighters and assault ships. As your skills improve, you can make serious attempts at the command ship.

Played a lot of tac cruiser. I started out with arties, but found them to be much too vulnerable to experienced corvette Captains once I started to get pulled into Veterans matches on a regular basis. Destroyers were my refuge if I wanted to be offensive.

T2 was a little better as I got a Dreadnought finally (no T1 dreadnoughts back then). The Dred's nukes and the destroyers goliath torpedo were very usefull, and fun, when I managed to get those.

My inexperienced fingers couldn't fly a corvette worth even trying more than once or twice.

T3 was best so far as I finally had ships that were worthy of Veterans matches, which I had played in more than Recruit, in spite of my selected match. I also found the Oberon T3 corvette reasonably flyable. Yea, I can actually play corvette, sort of.

During this whole stint, I was Elite. Us old guys need all the help we can get. Maintenance with T3s was doable with Elite, even with my usually poor scores.

I bought every ship available and all of the modules through T3 (some with passive leveling and FreeXP). Discovered that the T3 version of the Medium destroyer was a joke, compared to my fully equipped T2 version. Then discovered that my T2 modules were available to the T3 version. What a change.

T4 maintenance levels stopped me from trying to play T4 ships in my fleet. Played to get T4 ships in the hopes that maintenance would eventually be adjusted or go away.

Segue to the past for a moment. When making the move to Veterans, I ended up converting a lot of XP to FreeXP. Had to buy extra GB points to do it. Left a sour taste in my mouth. Almost never played Recruit after that.

As I approached finishing up the T3 ships that I wanted to get T4 ships from, I was looking at repeating that issue. Looked at not playing any more, after getting 11 T4 ships.

I finally did the Dola grind, to get to the Koschei (one of the 11). This ship forces you to learn to use your modules to get kills as its guns are bad. Did most of the grind with the guns that were worse, before a fix was implemented.

Got some of my worst scores, and some of my best. Became a better player I think.

Things changed with Proving Grounds. I could enjoy flying my ships, winning every game (think I lost once), and get a lot of experience with the controls and capabilities of my ships. I'd found out that new T4 ships were almost as useless as their T3 counterparts in most other matches, against the kind of experience that still plays these games.

Battle Bonus changed things once again. I stocked a Legendary fleet with some of my T4 ships. Discovered that passively leveling ships goes much faster when they are in 2 fleets. I now have a ship in Veterans and Legendary that are my main point harvesters. The other ships are passively leveling. Seriously looking at 2 more T4s.

I now tend to play a Legendary Proving Grounds (usually with T2 and T3 teammates), and then a Veterans Proving Grounds (both only one minute queue times). Quit for awhile, and then get back on later after the Battle bonus has reset.

I've managed to talk one of my sons into joining me once in while, and will play whatever he wants to, match wise. I persevered when he got fed up with Veterans matches when queued for Recruit, and with maintenance, so I have a much more extensive pool of ships to stock my fleets that he. He seemed to find Heroes of the Storm more entertaining, plus a few others.

My other son was a gifted corvette pilot, but found the maintenance and poor matchmaking intolerable. Again, Heroes of the storm and other games. We make do with golfing about twice a week until he moves to another state to take his first career job. Twilight golf is relatively cheap here.

Just re-upped for Elite now that it is not such a joke.

In a few more weeks I hope to have a full fleet of decently equipped T4 ships that I will feel good about taking into a regular Veterans match. Not sure I will ever enter a regular Legendary match.

I hope my experience is helpful to some of the newer players.

I would only play Onslaught, so that I could seal club some fighters and assault ships. They were usually away from the action and I could build up a semi-respectable score before some one would notice me off on the edge of the map, and come get a relatively easy kill.
